Broadcast TV set design, including news set design, sports,

WTXF-TV, the Fox affiliate in Philadelphia needed a flexible and unique set for its windowed, streetside studio. FX Group's design incorporates architectural elements from some of the city's most beloved landmarks — including the trusses from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

The set includes a sleek corner anchor desk, several mobile standup locations, an interview and demonstration area and in-studio weather pod. In addition to this streetside set, we also designed WTXF-TV's weather office set and assignment desk.

Many of the set's components are movable or modulars, including the interchangable frosted plexiglass panels that hang from a tracking system in front of the windows. Using specially- designed lighting, these panels can be illuminated in a wide variety of colors. The panels also help the bustling sidewalk action from distracting viewers from on-air talent. In addition, the windows are also equipped with roll-down black, white and 50 percent black backgrounds.

One challenge of this project was what to do with a large, structural column in the middle of the studio space. Instead of removing it, which would have added considerable cost to the project, our designers used it to support a plasma screen that rotates 360 degrees and can be used for tosses and bump shots.
