REELZ Channel, a digital cable channel focusing on news and information about movies, approached FX Design Group to create a glitzy, vibrant environment for their numerous shows. The REELZ team challenged FX to evolve their on air look from their original, dark, film noir, feel to a modern, bright and fun environment, that would allow them to showcase the high tech aspect of movie-making.
Creative Director, Mack McLaughlin and Set Designer Kevin Vickers approached the design utilizing shapes, vibrant colors and textures – all inspired by subtle images of Film/Movies/Music. The set environment features modern, sleek backlit surfaces and bold, bright colors. Vickers created both the set design as well as the printed graphics, including a leopard pattern superimposed on the sets flooring.
High tech elements in each area create maximum flexibility and include vertical flat screens, a multi-image video wall and color-changing LED lighting, giving variability of the look/branding. The short timelines for set changes for the 8 REELZ shows including “Maltin on Movies”, “Hollywood Dailes” and “Movies and Music” – all of which have separate identities – created a design challenge that was solved by the flexibility of the set venues.
